On the Record An interactive daily news quiz for The Washington Post that challenges players to identify notable quotes from top stories. Adding to The Post’s longstanding suite of crosswords and puzzles, On the Record was the first game developed in-house, expanding the newsroom’s games portfolio into original, news-driven gameplay.
I served as lead designer, shaping the game’s visual and experiential identity from concept through production. I developed the logo, color palette, UI structure, and core gameplay framework in close collaboration with developers and product partners, guiding the game’s evolution from early ideation to final launch.
My work established the foundational design system for On the Record, creating a cohesive, intuitive experience that integrates seamlessly within The Post’s broader games ecosystem.
I began by breaking down the conceptual architecture of the game and its intended behavior: fostering a recurring yet contextually aware habit of play. The primary gameplay mechanic centers on quotes from public figures as represented in news coverage, making recognition and interpretation the core interactive engine.
Once we landed on a logo direction that was both flexible and visually concise, I developed several iterations and presented them to the editorial and product teams to ensure the mark aligned with both storytelling and functional needs.
Beginning with monochromatic mockups to establish hierarchy and form,I revised these frequently with my team to adapt to feedback.
I then derived a cohesive color palette for the game by pulling from the existing Washington Post color palette. The palette included solid tones and a gradient comprising them all, giving the logo a sense of restrained play to elevate game’s personality while maintaining clarity. The palette was designed to invite players in without competing with the quotes, which remained the central and grounding dynamic of the gameplay.
In the final phase, I partnered with developers to refine the game’s UI/UX and ensure the gameplay translated seamlessly into a functional product. I also collaborated with homepage designers to envision, mock up, and implement the quiz identity across mobile, desktop, and social formats, maintaining consistency across platforms.
After launch, I continued to connect with subsequent designers to support adaptations of the game’s color palette, ensuring the system could evolve while preserving its core identity.
