Revealing the Smithsonian’s
‘racial brain collection’

An illustrated series for The Washington Post examining the racial history of the Smithsonian’s brain collection and ongoing repatriation efforts, unifying archival research and investigative reporting across multiple stories.

I collaborated with designers Audrey Valbuena and Tara Maccarty to develop topper illustrations that established a cohesive branding system for the package. Drawing from the series’ web design language, I distilled dominant visual elements into emblematic headers that crowned each article. In close collaboration with Photo Editor Robert Miller and the research team, I refined the treatment to ensure historical accuracy and contextual sensitivity.

I also led social coverage for the series, designing interactive carousels that extended the visual system across platforms and translated complex historical material into digestible, shareable storytelling.
